What is roll-your-own tobacco and how does it work?

Roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco, also known as hand-rolling tobacco, is loose tobacco that consumers use to make their own cigarettes. Unlike pre-manufactured cigarettes, RYO tobacco is sold in pouches or tins and requires separate rolling papers and, in some cases, filter tips.

To use it, a small amount of tobacco is placed inside rolling paper, shaped into a cigarette by hand or with a rolling device, and sealed by moistening the adhesive edge of the paper. The finished cigarette is then used in the same way as a standard manufactured cigarette. RYO tobacco remains a regulated product in Ireland and must comply with packaging, labelling and excise requirements.
